Poster Contest Winners Announced

July 11, 2014

 

 

After culling through all of the entries, our distinguished final judge, graphic

designer Melinda Haines was tasked with choosing 3 winners from a grouping of

selected finalists.  Congratulations to all and thanks to everyone who took the time

to submit a design!

 

Our judge, Melinda Haines, is a designer located in the great city of Portland, Oregon.

She has her Bachelor of Arts in graphic design from Portland State University. She

has a passion for collaborating with people who are savvy and thoughtful in their

intentions and have a random sense of humor. Melinda has interned at Sockeye

Creative and the Felt Hat. She is currently a Graphic Designer at A-HA!, a creative communications firm located in Vancouver, Washington.

Poster Contest Brief

April 6, 2014

 

Goal:

  • Create a movie poster for the documentary work-in-progress CRYING EARTH RISE UP!

  • Feel free to explore the theme of the fight to protect clean water

 

Eligibility:

  • The contest is open to all visual artists and designers

  • Posters may be designed by a single artist or by a team

  • Designers may submit any number of original posters

  • Posters should be original artworks and should not have been published in prints, digitally, through social media, etc.

Logline options (feel free to choose one or none):

  • Without water, there is no life.

  • A documentary about the fight to protect sacred water.

  • A documentary about the fight to stop the expansion of uranium mining.

  • Someday the Earth will weep, she will cry with tears of blood. You will make a choice--if you help her or let her die. And when she dies, you too will die. Lakota Prophecy, John Hollowhorn, 1932

  • Water is our first home…without water, there is no life.

  • A documentary exploring the impact of uranium mining on the land, water and people of the Great Plains.

 

Design Specs:

  • Posters should be designed in CMYK in vertical or horizontal format.

  • Entries must be submitted as JPG files of 3300x5100 pixels at a resolution of 300dpi (corresponding to 11x17 in printed size) and saved in RGB color space

  • Original illustrations only

  • The winning designer should be able to submit a layered file (.psd, .eps, .ai) of the winning design (retain your CMYK source file, as you will need to be able to deliver this if selected)

  • Leave a blank space at the bottom of the poster where we can add credits to the winning entries (for poster credit samples, see: http://www.postercredits.com/)

 

Deadline and Submission:

 

Things to Avoid:

  • DO NOT use stock images or clip art.

  • DO NOT submit copyrighted work, including photographs (even if they are modified) that you do not have the rights to.

 

“Fine Print”:

  • Contest organizers are entitled to the rights of any and all contest submissions, but must sign a release authorizing use of original artwork.

  • Contest submissions may appear on promotional materials, official merchandise, websites, social networks, email newsletters, etc for Crying Earth Rise Up!

  • Contest organizers are entitled to, but not required to utilize submissions.

  • Submissions must meet all requirements of the above contest submission criteria in order to be officially entered into the contest.

  • Contest organizers, contest judges and/or popular fan vote may select winners.

  • Contest entrants are entitled to use their submission as part of their personal portfolio.

  • There is no entry fee for submission.

 

Finalists Will Be Chosen Based On:

  • Aesthetic Appearance

  • Creativity

  • Successful interpretation of the spirit of the project

  • Compliance with the above criteria

 

Rewards:

  • $100 for 1st place

  • $50 for 2nd place

  • $25 for 3rd place

  • Selected artists will be featured in a story on our website

  • Winners will receive a special surprise fan pack

  • Credit in the final film will be given if the filmmakers use a submitted design in official packaging
